These are great tomatoes, from Italy, in a box. They are chopped just right for all kinds of sauces, soups, and everything. Great flavor. These are a basic in my pantry. With these, olive oil, garlic, and some cans of beans you are prepared. A great basis for a puttanesca sauce (this plus garlic, black olives, hot pepper flakes, anchovy paste, and capers) or just about anything else.

A high quality, GMO & BPA free tomato product!Oct 18, 2011

Taste & quality before corporate productivity! Pomi produces some of the highest quality packaged tomato products with the added bonus of being GMO and BPA free. And it's not just the fact that they are packed in Tetra-pack that makes them BPA free, it's also because they are not stored/transported in any BPA lined containers before final packaging. As far as GMO's, it looks like we are going to have to source produce from European countries that require GMO ingredient labeling until the USA catches up.

I had been using Muir Glen Organic whole/diced tomatoes, but after having had cancer I read a lot of research publications indicating that BPA's estrogen mimicking effects can be quite dangerous. BPA found in cans with acidic foods are some of the worst since the chemical is leached out even more. The same is true of plastic containers with BPA -- acid, heat or surface abrasion lead to much greater leaching into the food.
Although Muir Glen is promising to get rid of BPA in their can liners, they are replacing it with some unspecified 'vinyl-based substitute'. If you want to get their cans without BPA, look for a use-by date of around the summer of 2013. [This info is per a conversation with their customer service representative.]
I had heard about Pomi Tetra-pak products before -- Mario Batali and other foodies/chefs have recommended them so I thought I would give them a try.
The tomatoes are naturally grown in Italy without pesticides and have no salt added. I used them to create a wonderful marinara sauce. They taste great and I am very happy with the quality.

Perfect for all my uses. I used the tomatoes in soup and have also used it as a side dish with green vegetables. Does a nice job either way. I added lemon juice to make up for the salt-free aspect of the tomatoes, but that's healthier anyway.

Maybe the people ordering this product do not live in a grocery store or can't find a store that carries this product, but my grocery store (Harris Teeter in NC) carries this exact product (size, etc.) for $3.25 each. For a pack of 12 that would be $39
