4Region Free setup is a snapJul 30, 2010
I followed the instructions found in other reviews here to make this player region-free, and it worked like a charm. Five minutes after plugging it in and punching in the code, I was able to watch the DVDs I had just bought from amazon.co.uk in Great Britain. Awesome... I'm so psyched! My only observation so far is that the player has a very cheap feel to it, i.e. the disc eject button on the player, the remote.... very lightweight, cheap plastic feel that isn't up to the quality I'm used to.... but I suppose this is a growing trend to keep costs down, and the cost on this certainly was right. So, as a new owner, so far I am very pleased to have this, and mainly wanted to comment on the ease of region-free setup, and that it does indeed work.

5Does not come region free but in a few simple steps it's REGION FREEJul 07, 2010
I just purchased the Philips DVD player DVP5990 (1080P) at BEST BUY & it works just fine. Mind you, this DVD player does not come ready as REGION FREE as Best Buy had told me, but with a few easy steps it can be region free. I'm playing my world region DVDs with no trouble what so ever. This is what i did to make my new DVD player region free. (DISCLAIMER: Do this at your own risk & FREE WILL, i am NOT RESPONSIBLE if you mess up on the instructions. If you feel uncomfortable doing so, then DON'T DO IT, whether or not you believe that this may void your warranty is TOTALLY up to you. Do not mess with other settings unless you feel comfortable doing so & again, "you doing so at YOUR OWN FREE WILL". Remember, if i decide to jump off a cliff, no one is telling you to follow).

1. Turn on DVD player
2. Be sure there is no DVD/CD in the tray
3. Close the tray door
4. Press Setup on your remote control
5. Using the circular control arrows (around the OK button),
press on the right arrow > 3 times to select Preference Page,
6. Point remote at DVD player & press 1 3 8 9 3 1 this will bring up the Region Code.
7. Use the up/down arrows(around the OK button) to change region code to 0 (ZERO)
Press OK on your remote.

You should now be region free & able to play any region DVD as i am able to. Try your DVDs to see if it works. Also, i have read many reviews on this player acting up & konking out. REMEMBER, if you order this via MAIL, you have to consider the possible damage that your DVD player might incur with outside deliveries like,... being dropped, kicked, thrown, stepped on, crushed, etc. This kind of action can ruin the alignment of the innards and make it run improperly or konk out. If your box arrives damaged then you know it's been through something. You can buy this unit at many stores & even save on shipping. Enjoy this well made unit as I am. Philips has always made quality products & I own several.

5It's worthy to have it!Jun 08, 2010
My daddy's former Philips DVD player had been used 2 years and died. I bought newer model again. The price is good and my daddy loves the DVD player's function which can memorize where he stops the DVD and continue to play it.

5Region-Free in 5 Easy StepsMay 22, 2010
I am writing this short "review"--let's call it a Public Service Announcement--so you can make your Philips DVP5990 DVD player Region-Free. This works with either suffix (DVP5990/F7 or DVP5990/37) and probably any other variation; perhaps these denote what retail channel the box was sold through, or maybe it is simply a firmware reference. In any case, I will not elaborate on the technical aspects of this model, other than to say it is already a great value for the fifty to sixty dollars it usually sells for. I also cannot speak to the virtues of any particular vendor here, but whatever you do, DO NOT pay a premium to some company for a "Region-Free" DVP5990, because all they will be doing is what I tell you below. (Or, as at least one person has reported, you might pay more simply to get a piece of paper with the same instructions to do it yourself!)

This unit is HDMI-compatible and even includes a USB port on the front panel. It also plays just about everything and that's even before you make it region-free. Although the manufacturer will not admit it, the hardware in these DVD players is manufactured to play all regions, and a (very flimsy) layer of protection is then added depending on where the product will be sold. USA = Region 1, Europe = Region 2, etc.

Many DVD players can be easily returned to the default Region 0 (= PLAY ALL) setting simply by entering a hidden code on the remote, and this DVP5990 is no exception. I will make it super easy for you below. Make sure the DVD tray is empty before you start. And obviously you will need a non-Region 1 DVD to actually test that it works in the end.

(Step 0: Turn on the DVD player but make sure the tray is empty, i.e., don't put a disc in.)
1. Press "Setup" on the remote.
2. Using the right arrow (">") on the remote, move over to "Preference Page". You do not need to push "OK".
(Please note that if a disc is in, you will not be allowed to access the the "Preference" menu.)
3. Press 1,3,8,9,3,1 in that exact order on remote. (Again, you do not need to push "OK".)
4. Region Code screen will be displayed. (It will almost certainly show Region 1, unless someone has already made the change for you.) Press the up arrow ("^") once to select "0".
5. Press "Setup" on the remote.

I suggest to repeat Steps 1 through 3 to confirm region setting.

Congratulations, you now have a region-free player as it was designed in the Philips factory! You can now play discs from around the world, many of which are cheaper or quite simply available for sale when other versions are not. Wouldn't it be nice if everything in life were this easy?

P.S. Same code works for many models across the Philips range.

[DISCLAIMER: Whether or not you believe the scare tactics that this may void your warranty is up to you. And don't mess about with other settings unless you feel comfortable doing so.]

1don't buyMay 20, 2010
I purchased it to watch PAL formatted DVDs. It arrived timely, was easy to set up, worked great...for three months. Then it started sticking, jumping and making watching DVDs unpleasant. Then it ate my DVD and I'll have to take it apart to rescue the DVD.

Sadly disappointed in the player.
