Philips -- Simplicity and Quality!Nov 24, 2010
By C. Mancieri I needed an all-region code-free DVD player so I chose the Philips 3146K and am I sure happy that I did! Setting it up could not have been any easier -- I simply took it out of the box, connected it to my TV, plugged it in and popped in a disc and it was ready to go as easy as that! Of course you still have the option of changing the factory preset default settings, but I figured why tamper with perfection.
The picture quality and clarity are superb, as is the sound. I purchased this Philips to replace an inexpensive Magnavox player which served me perfectly and flawlessly for many years. The only feature that I will miss that the Philips does not provide that my Magnavox did feature is frame-by-frame advance in the pause mode.
If you're looking for simplicity in a DVD player which does require lengthy and complicated set-up and programming, and a player with exceptional picture quality and clarity, then look no further, the Philips 3146K is the one for you -- it is for me!
CUSTOMER UPDATE: A slight correction to my review -- In using the Philips 3146K now for a couple of weeks I find that it DOES have frame by frame advance in the pause mode, despite there being no mention of that feature in the product description. I liked the Philips 3146K before, but I now like it even more! A great DVD player!

Great valueJan 08, 2011

"movie nut"
I've had one all-region DVD player before this one and it made me very hesitant to buy another one. It was loud, the sound quality wasn't too great, and neither was the picture quality. This DVD player is great and I was very pleased when I put in a movie and all I heard was the movie, not the DVD player like was the case with my last all-region DVD player.
Between when the first one died and when I got this one my only option was downloading programs onto my laptop to watch the DVDs I bought while I was living in Scotland. When I bought a Mac computer, that wasn't even an option anymore. This DVD player made me very happy because I'm no longer stuck using my old laptop to watch some of my favorite movies and TV series, and I finally get to see them in higher quality. Before, either the color was off with my first all-region DVD player, or grainy on my laptop. I just hope this one has a longer life than my last all-region DVD player did.

Great alternativeAug 11, 2010

"Meticulous buyer"
We had some DVD from Europe we couldn't play anywhere but with special software in the laptop which was a hassle. My toddler is not really patient and it would take me a good 15 min to set everything up. Also, the software is not free, you can use a demo for a certain time but then you have to pay like $30 to download the full version.
I decided to buy this DVD player instead and it has been a great decision.
Comparing the video quality with our other Sony DVD player (which I was thinking of getting rid of) you can see it is not the best, nor is the sound. Thus we decided to keep both and we're very happy.
No more 15 min set ups and no more whining toddler.
